Step 1: Start with Local Google Search – “Flooring Contractors Near Me”
Focus on companies within 5–10 miles of your Bethany home. Local contractors are far more likely to show up quickly for bids and jobs.
- Skip the big sponsored ads at the top (Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.). They’re often paid placements.
- Look for actual flooring specialists with good local reviews and no “roofing” or unrelated services mixed in.

A. Check the Oregon CCB (Construction Contractors Board)
Go to search.ccb.state.or.us and verify their license. Look for:
- Active status
- How long they’ve been licensed (I prefer 3+ years)
- Complaint history over the past 10 years
B. Check the Oregon Secretary of State Business Registry
Search the business name. Confirm it’s active and see how long the company has existed. A brand-new LLC (under 2–3 years) raises red flags — sometimes it’s a previous company that rebranded after complaints. https://sos.oregon.gov/business/pages/find.aspx
C. Google “Company name complaints”
Such as, ABCDEF Roof Siding Company complaints. You’ll see Google finding specific complaints that you wouldn’t normally see.
Look for Real Proof of Work
- A professional website or Instagram with recent project photos (especially in Bethany or Portland).
- A reasonable number of reviews (I trust 20–50 solid 4-star reviews more than 400 suspicious 5-star ones).
- Consistent communication and willingness to come out for a bid.
Red Flags to Walk Away From Immediately
- Door-to-door solicitors or high-pressure sales tactics
- Requests for more than 10% upfront (I rarely pay for any upfront fee or go above that unless materials are involved, and even then I want receipts)
- Companies less than 2–3 years old with no established track record
- Anyone pushing you to decide “today” or sign immediately
